Bugaboos in the Siroka street

One house in Siroka street, today the location of the Maj department store, had a particularly frightful reputation. Stories are told of bloody bodies in the corridors, fiery heads staring upwards from the depths of the cellar, of specters running about the rooms of Siroka street.

Visitors to the house were often confronted with various deceptions by the devil, which extended to the street outside: a coach driven by a he-goat of gigantic proportions and a fiery tongue, discharged two devils who proceeded into the house.

On another occasion, when a visiting theater group stayed here in the second half of the 19th century, members of the cast reported hearing shots fired in the middle of the night, hearing mysterious sounds and footsteps, and the appearance of a white-veiled lady.
