Other Old Myths

  • The specter of Death appeared between the houses of Chrudim to warn of a threatening epidemic.
  • JIn one instance a deceased person had been placed in the coffin wearing white socks. At night mysterious footsteps resounded in the attic and staircase. The morning revealed the cadaver's socks were soiled, apparently from walking about the house. The funeral was delayed one day to ascertain if the episode should be repeated; when nothing happened, the corpse was properly buried.
  • The traitor Milota who betrayed the hiding place of the Dominican monks to the Hussites in 1421 (this version had them stuffed into barrels and burnt on the square), haunted the main square nightly with his wailing. However, his curse has long been removed.
