The story about the monastery treasure tells of the twelve silver statues of the apostles and the gold statue of Christ, all life-size; the eyes of apostles were solid gold, those of Christ, diamonds. Fearful of desecration or even ruin in troubled times of the past, the monks are said to have buried the statues in a secret place, most often thought to be the monastery garden.

Residents have been so convinced of the treasure's existence that, it is claimed, when house deeds were transferred, the new owners inserted a stipulation securing a share of the treasure should it be found on their property.

Another possible burial site was said to be the main square, in the spot reached by the shadow of the tip of the tower at exactly 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Alas, the passage of time failed to register just which tower was the one with the right shadow; moreover, some towers were changed by fire or new tops, and the date when the shadow was to have been observed had also been forgotten. So perhaps the statues of the square still lie waiting to be found.

But a third hiding place is also possible: in the powder tower. In fact there had been an official search conducted for the treasure here, leading to a discovery of a staircase leading to some place that was impossible to explore because the way was barred by rubble.
